Illinois State tops Wichita State

On February 23, 2012, the Illinois State women's basketball team improved to a 16-10 overall record and 11-4 record in the Missouri Valley Conference after defeating Wichita State. I attended a Women's basketball game vs. Wichita State University at the Redbird Arena. The entire game was extremely close, resulting with our Illinois State Redbirds winning 68-62. Marley Hall and Jamie Russell led the game with 18 points apiece, while Candace Sykes added 14.

I have never been a huge fan of basketball, but I do enjoy watching the Women and Men’s basketball team play at our arena. I love it because there is always so much energy in the stands has that everyone just feeds off of one another. From the screaming, yelling, cheering, it really lets me keep in mind that college is all about school spirit and having a good time. When I am at these games, it makes me feel like I am a part of something big.

Being able to see hundreds and hundreds of people sitting in the stands, the cheerleaders, the band, the dance team, and everyone that I know supporting our teams makes it a really special moment. There is not any part of the game that is boring. When there is a time out, there are activities for the Redbird fans. When I was there, there was a 3-hoop shooting contest at halftime sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings, the cheerleaders gave out free pizza from Papa John’s, and I am proud to say that I was on the “Dance Cam” with a few of my friends. One thing I love most about sporting events is seeing people of all ages all come together and support our school.

Nothing is better than being a part of one of our Redbirds team’s success and watching them represent our school. Going to sporting events is always such a fun time and really makes me feel like I am living the college experience. It makes me think that I am supporting something much bigger than myself.
